Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to you regarding the seminar, we organized in your hotel last week.

The event was related to the festival of Diwali and I helped the organization to celebrate it here in palm angles. All the responsibilities were on my head to lead all the activities there. This festive is related to our culture that’s why I know more about the preparation and presentation. In this , my main focus was on distributing gifts and sweets to guests and show some videos regarding the festival to everybody, who belongs to another culture .

I want to appreciate one thing about your hotel, they really helped me in organizing and the seating area was really big and easily accommodated more than 500 people. Staff was serving the food and drinks in a nice way, not only liked by guests but also our manager was so happy and appreciated me a lot for this type of hospitality.

It is really hard for me to say, the cost of booking is highly expensive and they did not provide us the Music system and we were not aware about that they will charge extra from us.I just want to say that your hotel should have to provide it in booking fees and need to improve the quality of air conditioning in the hall.If these things can be implemented ,the bookings for hotel will be increased.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing details about the Diwali seminar, highlighting the positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the explanation of your role and the event details is a bit repetitive, and the suggestion for improvement regarding the music system could be more clearly articulated. To improve, ensure that each bullet point is given equal weight and that your ideas are fully expanded with clear, logical explanations rather than just stating facts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'not only... but also' and 'if these things can be implemented'. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and some transitions feel abrupt. For example, the jump from discussing the event to the hotel's positive features could be smoother. Additionally, the use of punctuation is inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas and periods, which occasionally disrupts the reading flow. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'accommodated', 'hospitality', and 'implemented'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'all the responsibilities were on my head' (a more natural phrase would be 'I was responsible for') and 'this festive is related to' (should be 'festival'). Some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'not aware about that they will charge'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding informal or non-standard expressions in a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Staff was serving'), missing articles, and incorrect preposition usage. Additionally, there are several instances of improper spacing after punctuation marks. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and punctuation conventions will significantly improve your score.
