Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter to express my thanks to your hotel management and staff for helping to make my company annual event more memorable.

Our visual entertainment industry named Alstom, held an annual party at your hotel last weekend. The management gave me the responsibility to organize the event. I do not have any previous experience in conducting such huge programs. But your management was really co-operative and they gave their maximum effort to make it a great success. The major problem I was having with the distance between the parking lot and the event center. Because, our products are really heavy to carry all the way in and it requires additional carrying vehicles to move it. It will be another expenditure for my company. When I requested a solution for this issue, without any hesitation your staff made a nearby parking spot specially for us. It really helped us to get rid of big headache of our team.

But, I do have a small suggestion, if possible try to keep clean the washroom all the time. Because I got continues complains from the higher authority about it.

I hope you will aware of it next time. Once again thankyou for your valuable services.

Yours sincerely,

Emmanuel Paulose

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. The ideas are relevant and clearly explained, such as the specific issue with the parking distance and the subsequent resolution provided by the staff. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the closing is appropriate. The content is well-developed, and the student maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'But', 'Because', and 'Once again', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the event details to the positive experience and finally to the constructive suggestion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different points, which helps the reader navigate the text easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'co-operative' and 'expenditure'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'get rid of big headache' (should be 'get rid of a big headache') and 'continues complains' (should be 'continuous complaints'). While the range is sufficient to communicate the intended meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the distance', 'a nearby parking spot'), verb forms ('try to keep clean the washroom' should be 'try to keep the washroom clean'), and word forms ('I hope you will aware of it' should be 'I hope you will be aware of it'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. A greater focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage would improve the accuracy.
