Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writting this letter regarding the successful event we had last week.

The retirement party of our four seniors organised at your hotel. The speech ceremony of the management and the seniors who share their experience of working in the company was beyond my expectations. The staff enjoyed the speeches with the drinks you provide during the speech.

There were few things that grabbed my attention. The entrance gate was decorated beautifully. Furthermore, the crackers burst during the cake cutting was my first experience on any retirement party. Later on, the surprise of classical music from your side is the most appreciated. I wasn’t thinking the event would be that much exiciting and joyful.

Although the overall event was good but there are some area that i think shiuld be worked on, that includes the servers sometimes dissappears suddenly while guests were waiting for drinks or snacks. Moreover, the sound quality was good but it can be improved.

I really liked your hospitality and i would like to arrange more events at your hotel. Thank you for all the services.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the retirement party, the decor, and the service issues. To reach a higher band, ensure that the details are slightly more descriptive; for instance, instead of just mentioning the 'entrance gate', you could briefly explain why it was impressive. Overall, the task is fully covered.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore', 'Later on', and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the progression between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between the event description and the positive feedback could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'the surprise of classical music from your side'. Despite these minor issues, the message is easy to follow and the paragraph structure is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'retirement party', 'hospitality', and 'appreciated'. There are some spelling errors ('writting', 'exiciting', 'shiuld', 'dissappears') and minor collocation issues, such as 'the crackers burst' (should be 'fireworks were set off'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives and avoid repetitive phrasing like 'good' or 'nice'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement ('servers sometimes dissappears') and tense inconsistencies ('the drinks you provide' should be 'provided'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some issues with capitalization and sentence boundaries. While the meaning is always clear, the frequency of these minor errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on consistent verb tenses and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
