Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I hope all is well.
My name is Shivam, and I am an operational manager of the Canadian security force.
I am writing this letter to inform you about the event that we organized at your hotel.
During the last weekend, we planned our event at your hotel, and the event was all about planning the company's next year budget. We were six people in the meeting, and we all have been to your hotel before.
We all were highly satisfied with the hospitality your staff had provided. Also, I appreciate the privacy maintained by your staff, as there was no disturbance at all.
However, I would like draw your attention on the food which was served yo us. As I mentioned before that we all have been to your hotel before, but this time we did not find food relatively good. I particularly felt, the salad was not fresh instead it felt more like stale.
Moreover, couple of our staff member from the group compliant about curries, as they felt it more spicy than usual.
Therefore, I would like to take an initiative on the company's behalf and suggest you to look into this matter seriously.
I hope to see the improvements on mentioned areas until we visit next time.
Thank you and have a pleasant day.
Sincerely,
Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the event (budget planning), mentioned positive aspects (hospitality and privacy), and suggested areas for improvement (food quality). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, you could have briefly explained why the privacy was important for your specific meeting. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and meets all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the positive feedback, then to the complaints, and finally to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to link your points. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'the food which was served yo us' (typo) and 'mentioned areas'. Improving the flow between sentences would help achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'operational manager', 'hospitality', and 'initiative'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'felt more like stale' instead of 'tasted stale' and 'compliant' (should be 'complained'). Additionally, there are minor spelling errors like 'yo' instead of 'to'. To improve, focus on using more precise adjectives and ensuring correct word forms. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I would like draw your attention on' (missing 'to' and incorrect preposition 'to' instead of 'on'), 'couple of our staff member' (should be 'members'), and 'felt it more spicy' (should be 'felt it was spicier'). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
