Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to formally request you to arranged an event at your hotel.
The main concern is that we arranged a grand annual closing dinner of "The Bank of Punjab" on 5th January at your hotel. Almost 2000 people are invited over the country. Although it is a large dinner and the CEO of the bank are also invited. Every year bank arranged their annual dinner at this hotel because your hotel provided good services and hotel management is very cooperative.
Furthermore, last year the quality of food was not good. This has resulted in bad impression on our employees. I would appreciate it if you could improve the food quality this year. Details of the events is attached for your reference. I trust this matter will be resolved promptly as your policy.
Thank you for your attention. I expect a response within 7 working days. Please contact me at my email id : [redacted email] for further clarification.
Yours Sincerely,
Sidra Yousaf

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. However, the opening sentence is confusing, as you state you are writing to 'request' an event that you later describe as having already been arranged. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the hotel's services and management, these points could be expanded with more specific examples to better fulfill the task requirements. The purpose of the letter is clear, but the logical flow regarding the event's status needs more precision.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'Although', which assist in connecting ideas. However, the transition between the opening request and the description of the event is abrupt and slightly disjointed. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where the shift from the past event to the upcoming one is not handled smoothly. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'formally request', 'cooperative', and 'clarification'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'arranged an event' (when you mean to discuss an existing booking) and 'bad impression on our employees' (which should be 'a bad impression'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that your word choices accurately reflect the intended meaning in a professional context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'I am writing to formally request you to arranged' contains an incorrect verb form, and 'the CEO of the bank are also invited' shows a subject-verb agreement error. You rely mostly on simple sentence structures, with limited attempts at complex sentences. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of errors in basic grammar—such as tense consistency and subject-verb agreement—prevents a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for these fundamental errors will significantly improve your accuracy.
