Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to express my gratitude towards the farewell function of one of my senior colleague, that was organised recently in your premises.
Through this letter i want to thanks you for making this event memorable for our company. My friend Naveen gave me your reference. Everything in that function was good. Specially the anchoring part that was surprise for all of us. That part make our night special. Moreover your services of food and drinks at each table was commendable. Also, the decoration that you provide in the hall was really going with the theme of the event.
However i want to add some points where i personally believe that improvements are required. First of all, the parking area needs to be spacious as your hotel is big, so you can go for proper parking space. Further, the washrooms was not cleaned.
Hope you will look into these issues.
Thanks

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention the parking and washrooms as areas for improvement, providing a bit more detail or a specific suggestion for how these could be improved would have strengthened the response. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is left with a good understanding of your experience, though a slightly more formal opening and closing would enhance the professional quality of the correspondence.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and 'However' to transition between ideas. While the progression is generally clear, some of the linking is a bit mechanical. The referencing is mostly effective, though there are minor issues with sentence flow, such as the transition between the event details and the feedback section. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'gratitude', 'commendable', and 'spacious'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in your premises' (should be 'on your premises') and 'the anchoring part' (which is slightly informal). You also use 'provide' instead of the past tense 'provided'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and using more precise business-related terminology would improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'one of my senior colleague' should be 'one of my senior colleagues' (plural noun after 'one of'), and 'the washrooms was not cleaned' should be 'were not cleaned'. Additionally, there are issues with capitalization, such as 'i' instead of 'I'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
