Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir / Madam,
My name is Pooja Rani. Hope you are doing great. I am writing to you to provide valuable feedback regarding you hotel King Cliff. Last Monday, I booked your party hall on behalf of the Amazon group of association for an event during lunch time for approximately 30 people.
The management was excellent, and the service provided by your staff was truly exceptional. They were extremely professional, courteous, and attentive throughout. My employers were highly impressed by the level of service and professionalism.
Although your service was among the best we have ever experienced, especially the quality of food, there is a suggestion that I would like to make is that you should add more vegetarian option to your menu. Most of my co-workers do not eat meat and they had very limited option to choose from.
I hope you will consider my suggestion.
Thank you very much for your time and support.
Yours faithfully,
Pooja Rani

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

| Lexical Resource | 6.0 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.5 |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, expressing appreciation for the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The event details are clear, and the suggestion regarding vegetarian options is well-integrated. The response is fully developed and maintains a consistent, professional tone throughout. All parts of the prompt are covered effectively, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher. To reach a higher band, the student could provide slightly more specific details about the event or the hotel's features to demonstrate a more sophisticated level of task development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'However' (implied), and 'Therefore' are used, though the flow could be improved with more varied transition words. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is logical. The letter is easy to follow, and the relationship between the ideas is clear. It meets the criteria for Band 7.0 as it uses a range of cohesive devices effectively, even if some transitions are slightly repetitive.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the context, using terms like 'professional', 'courteous', and 'attentive'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'Amazon group of association' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and 'limited option' (should be plural 'options'). While the range is adequate for the task, it lacks the 'less common' lexical items that would push the score into the 8.0 range. The student communicates their meaning clearly, but the word choice is somewhat standard. Improving the precision of collocations would enhance the overall lexical quality.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few minor errors, such as 'regarding you hotel' (should be 'your') and 'there is a suggestion that I would like to make is that' (which is grammatically redundant). Despite these slips, the meaning is never obscured, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The punctuation is generally correct, and the formal structure is maintained. The level of accuracy is consistent with a Band 7.0, as the errors are infrequent and do not impede communication.
