Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. The purpose of writing this letter is to provide feedback regarding an event which held on last Sunday. Therefore, I would love to inform you that the party was incredible, although there were some areas which could be better.

To begin with, my complete team including manager was really enjoyed that night because of decoration, lighting and music. Without any doubt, it was an amazing show not only because of stage but also food played vital role. Moreover, the breathtaking fragrance of the hotel enhanced the value of the event.

However, there was always a room for improvement. For instance, I checked in the washroom water was coming too slowly. Apart from this, one of my teammate informed me heater was making unusual sound. If you focused on these areas, I strongly believe it will be win-win situation.

I hope you will take my actions shortly on my suggestions.

Yours faithfully,

Sachin Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the 'decoration, lighting and music', these could be expanded upon to provide more specific context. Similarly, the suggestions for improvement are clear but could be more detailed to fully satisfy the requirement for a professional complaint or feedback letter. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'However' to transition between ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'I checked in the washroom water was coming too slowly' lacks a clear cohesive link to the previous sentence. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'incredible', 'breathtaking', and 'vital role'. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'event which held on last Sunday' (should be 'which was held') and 'take my actions' (should be 'take action'). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some phrasing is slightly unnatural. However, the vocabulary used is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any significant impediment to the reader. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for formal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'my complete team including manager was really enjoyed' (should be 'really enjoyed') and 'one of my teammate' (should be 'teammates'). Additionally, the sentence 'I checked in the washroom water was coming too slowly' is missing a conjunction or preposition to connect the clauses. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and plural nouns.
