Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am wring this email regarding the gala event organized by xyz ltd. last week at your hotel. The event was to show gratitude towards our hardworking employees who helped us to achieve yearly targets.
I have got many messages from my team stating about the ambience and hygiene in the event experienced by them. I would really appreciate your staff for making our function marvellous.
Though, I would specifically point out the nail unturned. we noticed that the welcome drink was not reached to many of are guests as they were running late at the event. Furthermore, we tend to have a different taste buds, but, all felt that salt was missing in the curry. I would just point out this as it is not a big fish to fry.
Our firm is still impressed by the hospitality provided by your team, so would assure you that we would definitely consider your hotel for upcoming events.
Thank you,
yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the event was for employees, more specific details about the nature of the gala or the number of attendees would have strengthened the response. Additionally, the suggestions for improvement are slightly vague and could be more professionally articulated to better suit a business context. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of information could be improved to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the email to positive feedback, then to areas for improvement, and finally a closing statement. Paragraphing is used, though the structure is a bit disjointed due to the short, choppy sentences. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'Though', but the transition between ideas could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow is somewhat mechanical. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, unified focus.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but there are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect idiomatic usage. For example, 'nail unturned' is an incorrect variation of the idiom 'leave no stone unturned', and 'big fish to fry' is used incorrectly here, as it usually refers to having more important matters to attend to. Phrases like 'tend to have a different taste buds' are also unnatural. While you successfully convey your meaning, the lack of precision and the misuse of idioms prevent a higher score. Focus on using standard business collocations rather than forcing idioms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. You have several grammatical errors, such as 'I am wring' (spelling), 'was not reached to many of are guests' (passive voice error and 'our' vs 'are' confusion), and 'I would just point out this' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization (e.g., 'Dear sir', 'xyz ltd'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to distract the reader and indicate a need for more careful proofreading.
