Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to thank you for the excellent service provided by your hotel during an event that my company organised recently. I would also like to share some positive feedback and suggestions for improvement.
Last Saturday, our company held an annual staff appreciation event, attended by approximately 80 employees. It included a welcome speech, a management presentation, a buffet dinner and entertainment activities. We chose your hotel because of its convenient location and spacious function hall.
I was particularly impressed by the professionalism and friendliness of your staff. They were extremely helpful and responded promptly to our requests. The function room was clean, well decorated and equipped with excellent audio-visual facilities. The food was also outstanding.
However, there are a few areas for improvement. The registration area became crowded, so additional staff would be helpful. Some guests also found it difficult to locate the function hall because the signs were unclear. More prominent signs would improve the experience.
Overall, we were very satisfied and would be happy to consider your hotel for future events.
Yours faithfully,
Vijay

The response fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly described the event (annual staff appreciation event with 80 attendees), highlighted positive aspects (staff professionalism and food quality), and provided constructive suggestions for improvement (registration congestion and signage). The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is smooth. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Last Saturday', 'I was particularly impressed', and 'However', to transition between ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the letter. The structure is professional and easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases like 'annual staff appreciation event', 'promptly to our requests', and 'audio-visual facilities' are used accurately. The language is natural and precise, which helps convey your message effectively. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical control is strong and supports clear communication without any noticeable errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employ both simple and complex sentences, such as 'I was particularly impressed by the professionalism and friendliness of your staff' and 'Some guests also found it difficult to locate the function hall because the signs were unclear.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede meaning. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, reflecting a high level of proficiency.
