Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my appreciation for the excellent arrangements made at your hotel when our company organized a corporate event there recently.
The event was held last Sunday and was attended by approximately 90 employees, including senior management. I was a formal presentation , a team-building session and dinner in the night. Overall, the event ran smoothly.
What I particularly liked about your hotel was the professionalism of the staff. They were friendly, attentive and responded promptly to our requests. In addition, the conference room was spacious and well-equipped wit modern audio-visual facilities. The quality of food was also impressive, especially the variety of vegetarian options.
However, I believe there are a few areas could be improved. The Wi-Fi connection was unstable during the presentation, which caused a minor interruption. Furthermore, there was a shortage of parking spaces when most guests arrived at the same time.
Thank you once again for your excellent service. I hope to have the opportunity to organise another event at your hotel in the future.
Yours faithfully,
Vishal Goyal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing event details, highlighting positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. You have maintained a consistent professional tone throughout, which is essential for this task type. To reach a higher band, ensure that your description of the event is slightly more cohesive, as the sentence structure in the second paragraph is a little fragmented.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You have used appropriate paragraphing to separate the different requirements of the task. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Furthermore', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through your points. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. The letter follows a standard formal structure, which is appropriate for this task. The flow is natural, and there is no confusion regarding the sequence of events or the points being made.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'corporate event', 'senior management', 'promptly', and 'audio-visual facilities'. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. While your vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items could elevate your score further. For instance, instead of 'quality of food was impressive', you could use 'culinary offerings were exceptional'. Overall, your lexical control is solid and fits the requirements of the task well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally good control. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I was a formal presentation' (which should be 'There was a formal presentation') and 'well-equipped wit' (a typo for 'with'). Additionally, 'areas could be improved' should be 'areas that could be improved'. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained through correct grammatical choices.
