Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to review about your hotel where I organised an event of my company a week ago.

Overall, It was a really good experience arranging meeting of my office workers in your hotel. Conference room was equipped with technical equipment, and was spacious with capacity of fifty persons. Moreover, hospitality and services provided by your staff members were up to the mark which was praised by my colleagues.

Personally, I liked the aesthetic infrastructure of the venue. The proper ventilation as well as proper lights were making the event more comfortable. During the meeting, refreshments including beverages provided by the employees of hotel were delicious.

Although the lunch was very healthy for vegetarians as well as for non-vegetarian which was admired by every member of my workplace, there should be separate stalls for veg eaters and non-veg eaters as many vegetarian felt it awkward to place both type of food, veggies and meat, on the same table.

Looking forward for hearing a positive response from your side.

Yours faithfully,

Navpreet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting an area for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development could be slightly more sophisticated to reach a higher band. For example, the suggestion regarding the food stalls is practical and well-explained. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the response maintains a consistent focus throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Although', and 'During the meeting' are used to link ideas effectively. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'review about your hotel' (should be 'provide feedback on') and 'veg eaters' (which is informal). While the range is sufficient to communicate the message, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. The use of terms like 'aesthetic infrastructure' and 'up to the mark' shows an attempt to use more varied language, though some collocations could be more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several minor grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('capacity of fifty persons' should be 'a capacity of fifty people') and some awkward phrasing ('many vegetarian felt it awkward'). Despite these errors, the meaning is never in doubt, and the reader can easily follow the points being made. The punctuation is generally correct, and the sentence variety is sufficient to maintain interest, though more complex structures could be used to demonstrate greater control.
