Student answer (Band 5.0)
Dear Ms Smith,
SUBJECT : COMPLAINT ABOUT A PIECE OF FURNITURE.
I am writing this letter to bring to your kind attention regarding a piece of furniture which I had bought last week from your local shop. It was a designed wooden table with glass.
The table was good in quality and in design when I had selected it from the shop. Because I did not have the vehicle to picked it up, that was why I had chosen delivery method to deliver it up at my place, but when I opened it, I was really disappointed because the glass was totally damaged.
As I am a loyal customer, it would be really appreciated if there will be an exchange for this table. For further reference, I had already sent the damage pictures and the bill of this table on the email.
Hoping to receive a quick and prompt response at the earliest.
Kind regards,
Parwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 2.0
The response fails to address the task instructions entirely. The prompt asks for a letter to a hotel manager regarding an event organized at their hotel. Instead, you have written a complaint letter about a piece of furniture purchased from a shop. Because you have completely misunderstood the task requirements and written about an irrelevant topic, the response cannot be assessed as a successful completion of the task. To improve, you must carefully read the prompt instructions and ensure your content directly aligns with the scenario provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear opening and closing. You use basic paragraphing to separate the introduction, the problem, and the request for action. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, such as the repetitive use of 'the table' and 'it'. While the flow is easy to follow, the lack of relevance to the actual task prompt makes the overall structure ineffective in the context of the exam requirements. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You use simple, repetitive terms like 'good', 'damaged', and 'pictures'. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'delivery method to deliver it up'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more sophisticated vocabulary and idiomatic expressions that are appropriate for a formal business letter. For example, instead of 'good in quality', you could use 'high-quality craftsmanship'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'I did not have the vehicle to picked it up' (incorrect verb form) and 'if there will be an exchange' (incorrect conditional structure). Additionally, 'bring to your kind attention regarding' is grammatically awkward. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. Focus on mastering basic verb tenses and ensuring subject-verb agreement to improve your accuracy.
