Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to give you a feedback on behalf of our corporation as we successfully hosted over hundred people event at your hotel last month. Discussions at the event produced positive results for us in recent week and without coordination and cooperation of hotel staff it would had not been possible.

The hall provided to us was quite spacious and everyone seemed comfortable with environment we were able to build. An notable mention for audio system which was exceptionally clear to listen throughout the hall. Audio system is always most talked about thing in such events but our staff did not but rather appreciated the quality.

Although, I think there is room for improvement in one particular area. Our staff did mentioned that restrooms needed more cleaning intervals. I understand that such big event will surely impact this particular area but if more staff or intervals of cleaning gets appointed in ongoing event could reduce number of complaints significantly.

Overall, in future we would like to surely host more events at your hotel and expect extraordinary services provided by your staff.

Your faithfully,

Ranjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting an area for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development of the 'improvement' section could be slightly more detailed to reach a higher band. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the reader is left with a good understanding of the writer's experience and expectations. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the event details to positive feedback, then to constructive criticism, and finally to a closing statement. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Overall', and 'in future' are used to link ideas effectively. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the referencing is generally clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'give you a feedback' (should be 'provide feedback') and 'intervals of cleaning gets appointed' (should be 'cleaning schedules are increased'). However, the writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to express ideas clearly, including terms like 'coordination', 'cooperation', and 'exceptionally clear'. While there is limited use of less common lexical items, the current range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without significant difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'over hundred people event' (missing 'a' and 'person'), 'it would had not been possible' (incorrect verb tense), and 'Our staff did mentioned' (incorrect verb form). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the mistakes do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout. To improve, the writer should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of auxiliary verbs in complex sentences.
