Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter to provide my feedback about an event that I recently organized in your hotel.

Last month, my company conducted an award event in your hotel. This event was specially designed to praise the excellence of employees. The number of people who attended were around 50. The company’s chairperson also came to announce the winners.

It was my responsibility to choose the location of the event because I am familiar with this area. I particularly chose your hotel, since it is situated in the heart of the city. That is why, travel was not an issue for employees. The second reason to chose your sight is the reputation you gained in the decade. Public reviews were enough to convince me about this location.

I want to mention some suggestions that could make the experience more enjoyable. Providing useful equipments such as mic, projectors, and reliable stage for such events. Either management should invest in making one particular hall which is designed for professional events.

I hope you consider my suggestion.

Yours faithfully,

A

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the event (an award ceremony for 50 people), mentioned what you liked (location and reputation), and suggested areas for improvement (equipment and hall facilities). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your suggestions are slightly more developed; for instance, explaining why the current equipment is insufficient would add more depth to your argument. Overall, the response is clear, relevant, and fully meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'since', 'that is why', and 'the second reason', which help connect your sentences. To improve, try to vary your linking words further and ensure that the transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'conducted', 'excellence', 'reputation', and 'convince'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'chose your sight' (should be 'site') and 'equipments' (equipment is an uncountable noun and does not take an 's'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring that you use uncountable nouns correctly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to provide...' and 'I particularly chose your hotel, since it is situated...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'The number of people who attended were around 50' (should be 'was') and 'The second reason to chose' (should be 'choose'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency.
