Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well,

I write this letter to inform you about the event which happen on this week on Friday at 11:00 in the morning at your hotel. Near about 200 guest attend the event. The decoration I need is minimal in hall area.

I visited in the hotel yesterday to see the things how it's going on. I like all the stuff the decor on the tables and chairs even like the design of the furniture. The pictures hang on the walls are well-suited with our event.

There are few things which I wanted to change, first the banner of the event hang on the door seems a bit weird. So, the placement for the banner should be on the wall as well as on each table there should be a flower pot and names of the guest which i provide you day before event. Additionally, the sound system have some issue which need to be fix as early as possible.

Thank you for your time,

Best regards,

Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: providing event details, expressing appreciation for the hotel, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the event details are slightly confusing regarding the timeline ('happen on this week on Friday'), and the suggestions for improvement are presented as a list of demands rather than constructive feedback. While the purpose of the letter is clear, the tone is occasionally blunt, which affects the professional quality expected in a formal letter. To improve, ensure that the event details are clearly articulated and that suggestions are framed with more polite, professional language.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into three distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited. There is a reliance on simple sentence structures, and the transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt. For example, the shift from describing the decor to suggesting changes lacks a smooth linking phrase. While the overall progression is logical, the lack of varied linking words (such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition to this') makes the flow feel somewhat mechanical. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would significantly enhance the readability of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and sophistication. You use basic terms like 'things', 'stuff', and 'weird', which are not ideal for a formal business letter. There are also some collocation issues, such as 'The pictures hang on the walls' (should be 'The pictures hanging on the walls') and 'the sound system have some issue' (should be 'has some issues'). While the meaning is generally clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, formal vocabulary related to event management and professional correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex sentences, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('the sound system have some issue'), tense usage ('event which happen on this week'), and article usage ('the banner of the event hang on the door'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices and missing periods. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to distract the reader. Focusing on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring correct verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, will help improve the accuracy of your writing.
