Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir/madam.
i am writing to thankyou for the excellent service provided by your hotel when my company recently organised a corporate event there.
The event was held last weekend to celebrate our company's anniversary. Around 100 employees attented, and the program included a formate dinner, speechs and various types of activites. Overall, the event was enjoyed themselves.
I was particularly impressed by the hotel's perfessional staff and the quality of food. The function room was specious, clean abd well organise and all things and well decorated and staff were very friendly and helpful throughout the evening. I also appreciated the efficinet service and the comfortable seating arrangements.
However, I believe there are a few areas became quite be improved. The parking area become quite crowed during the event, so providing additional parking space or better guidance for guests would be helpful.
In addition, the sound system could be upgraded to ensure that speeches can be heard clearly by everyone.
Thank you once again for your excellent service. I hope to have the opportunity to organise another event to your hotel in future.
your faithfully,
Dev

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is slightly more nuanced; for example, when discussing the parking, you could briefly explain the impact on the guests' experience to add more depth. Overall, the task is fully covered and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. You use paragraphing effectively to separate the different topics. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'However' are used to link ideas, though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Some minor errors in referencing, such as 'the event was enjoyed themselves', slightly disrupt the flow, but the overall progression of information remains logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'corporate event', 'anniversary', and 'professional staff'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'perfessional', 'specious' (instead of spacious), 'abd', and 'efficinet'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise collocations to enhance the sophistication of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the event was enjoyed themselves', 'areas became quite be improved', and 'organise another event to your hotel'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing after commas. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent sentence construction will help improve your accuracy.
