IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Provide details about the event
– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to let you know about the details of an event which was held in order to and make a memorable one.

At the onset, I really liked the decoration and organization of the event. Everything was so beautifully crafted and designed, but the most important thing was the food. It was so delightful and savory in taste particularly chicken pasta.

Further, along with the meal, staff also served various drinks which we have not experienced anywhere. Therefore, everything was so tasty and appealing.

In contrast, one suggestion I need to make for further improvement is limited space in the hotel as many people were arriving to enjoy this period but due to shortage, they had to return.

I hope you will look into this matter carefully and will think of extending the area.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Kashi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the details about the event are vague, as you do not specify what the event was or when it occurred. The suggestion for improvement regarding space is clear, but the explanation is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that you provide more specific context and elaborate on your ideas with greater depth, ensuring the tone remains consistently professional throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'At the onset', 'Further', and 'In contrast' to signal transitions between ideas. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the connection between the opening sentence and the rest of the paragraph is weak. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed idea will enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'memorable', 'delightful', 'savory', and 'appealing'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'held in order to and make a memorable one', which is grammatically awkward and lacks a clear object. Additionally, 'enjoy this period' is an unnatural way to refer to an event. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, incorporating more precise, topic-specific collocations would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'held in order to and make a memorable one' (missing object and redundant 'and') and 'staff also served various drinks which we have not experienced anywhere' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some awkward phrasings that slightly impede the flow. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining your use of relative clauses. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move into the higher band range.
