Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir,

I'm writing this letter to appreciate your hotel management for helping me to organise such a successful event for my company. The event was held in the conference room of your restaurant on the 5th floor, and this was one of the most important events for awarding the best employees of the organisation.

However, everything managed and conducted was well planned and structured: the speeches, workshops, and award ceremony but there are few

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which severely impacts the task achievement score. Because the letter is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence, it fails to address all parts of the prompt. Specifically, the student mentions the event details but does not fully develop the points regarding what was liked about the hotel or provide any suggestions for improvement. To achieve a higher band, the response must be completed in full, ensuring all three bullet points from the instructions are addressed with sufficient detail and supporting information.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The text is too short to demonstrate a clear logical progression or effective paragraphing. While the opening sentence is clear, the abrupt ending prevents the development of a coherent structure. Cohesive devices are minimal, and the transition between the initial appreciation and the 'However' clause is not fully realized due to the incomplete nature of the text. To improve, the student should organize the letter into distinct paragraphs for each bullet point and use linking words to connect ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is functional but basic. Phrases like 'appreciate your hotel management' and 'well planned and structured' are appropriate for a formal letter, but the limited length prevents the demonstration of a wider or more sophisticated range of vocabulary. There are no significant errors in word choice, but the lack of depth makes it difficult to assess the student's ability to use less common lexical items. Expanding the response will allow for the inclusion of more descriptive and precise language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The grammar in the existing sentences is generally accurate, with correct use of simple and compound structures. However, the range is limited, and the text ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence ('but there are few'). Because the response is so short, it is impossible to judge the student's ability to use a variety of complex structures consistently. To improve, the student should focus on completing sentences and incorporating a wider variety of grammatical forms, such as passive voice or conditional structures, which are common in formal correspondence.
