Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I recently helped my company organize an event at your hotel. I am writing this e mail to you to let you know that we had a really great time at your hotel.

So basically, this event was all about celebrating our really big win. Our company signed a big deal last week, so our boss decided to give us a party. The event was all about the staff and giving them what they worked for.

I was also a part of this party, and I really like your hotel. But specifically, the food of your hotel is really wonderful. I rarely like food at any hotel but I really enjoyed staying there.

However, I really thought about one thing, which was l wish I had more accessories available in the washroom, especially for girls. I think we girls would all be really happy if we have everything we need is available in the hotel so we don't need to carry everything here and there.

Your sincerely,

Janvi Parekh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing details about the event, mentioning what you liked, and suggesting improvements. However, the tone is consistently informal and conversational, which is inappropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. Phrases like 'So basically' and 'we girls' are too casual. To improve, ensure your language remains professional throughout. While the ideas are relevant, they could be developed with more specific detail—for example, describing the type of event or the specific nature of the 'big win' would add depth. The closing 'Your sincerely' contains a minor grammatical error (should be 'Yours sincerely').

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'I was also a part of', which help the reader follow your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is somewhat abrupt. The use of linking words is functional but repetitive. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of cohesive devices (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to create a more sophisticated flow between your sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. You rely heavily on simple, repetitive words like 'really', 'big', and 'good'. For instance, 'really great time' and 'really wonderful' are quite basic. To improve, you should aim for more precise adjectives and collocations. Using more sophisticated vocabulary—such as 'exceptional', 'significant', or 'amenities'—would demonstrate a better command of the language. The current word choice is functional but does not show the flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, 'I am writing this e mail to you to let you know' is wordy, and 'if we have everything we need is available' is grammatically incorrect. There are also issues with article usage and phrasing, such as 'the food of your hotel'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and reducing wordiness. Incorporating more varied complex structures, such as conditional sentences or relative clauses, would also help boost your score.
