Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to thank you for all the arrangements that have done for the event.

Our Company has completed 25 years of success, therefore we were celebrating this special day by inviting all our colleagues and honored them with prizes.

The decoration of the party impressed me a lot as it was perfect for the event. Moreover, the catering was awesome. I never experienced the taste and variety of cuisines provided for our guests. Everyone was praising for your food and zig-zag arrangement of table s and chairs.

What I do not like about the hotel is cleanliness because I observed that the washrooms were not cleaned properly and it lacks basic amenities such as toiletries. The dance floor was sticky too. I think it was not mopped by your housekeepers. Therefore, I want you to improve the housekeeping service of your hotel. otherwise rest is good.

I look forward hearing from you.

Thank You

Yours faithfully,

Hardeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The purpose is clear, and the tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention the event was for the company's 25th anniversary, more specific details about the nature of the event or the number of guests would have strengthened the response. The suggestions for improvement are clear, but the overall tone could be slightly more professional in its request for action. All parts of the prompt are addressed, meeting the requirements for a solid performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between the positive feedback and the negative feedback is abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'otherwise rest is good,' which is a bit informal and lacks a clear cohesive link to the previous sentences. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'arrangements,' 'honored,' and 'amenities.' There are some instances of slightly unnatural word choices, such as 'zig-zag arrangement' to describe seating, which is not standard collocation, and 'I never experienced the taste,' which could be phrased more naturally. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise lexical items that would push the score into the higher bands. Focusing on collocations and more formal expressions will improve your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'arrangements that have done' (should be 'have been done') and 'honored them' (should be 'honoring them' to maintain parallel structure). You also have minor issues with articles and prepositions, such as 'praising for your food' (should be 'praising your food'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the reader's understanding of your message. To improve, focus on passive voice construction and consistent verb tense usage.
