Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I write this letter with regard to the recent event held at the hotel last weekend which I was the event planner. It was an award presentation party of our most hardworking staff.

The event was an unforgettable one. The atmosphere was peaceful and calm. The activities on the list was fully packed and fun filled. I am very sure the younger staffs were motivated.

However, the most interesting thing about your establishment everyone talked about is your staff. They were friendly and helpful. In addition, the food served where made carefully and the local ingriedient used in preparing the dishes blended very well.

Furthermore, I would like to make some suggestions about the decoration. I believe additional balloons and flowers would make the hall more lively. This is because the occasion is about achievement and celebration. Also, the car park is not organized. This made it stressful for our employers to get a good parking spot.

I am very happy the event was a successful one. On behalf of my company, thank you for your hospitality.

Yours Sincerely,

Rosemary Adibe

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed. For instance, when mentioning the car park, you could briefly explain how the lack of organization specifically impacted the event schedule. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'In addition,' and 'Furthermore' to transition between ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is tighter. For example, the transition between the food quality and the suggestion for decoration could be more fluid. Overall, the paragraphing is effective and supports the reader's understanding.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'unforgettable,' 'motivated,' and 'hospitality.' However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'ingriedient' (ingredient) and 'staffs' (staff is an uncountable noun in this context). Additionally, the phrase 'food served where made' contains a grammatical error that affects lexical precision. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common professional terms. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated descriptors for the event and the hotel's services would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which I was the event planner' (should be 'where I was the event planner'), 'activities... was' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'employers' (you likely meant 'employees'). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of relative clauses. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you reach a higher band.
