Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you about the feedback on the recent company event arranged in your hotel. You will be delighted to know that the experience was highly appreciated. However, some areas that could be improved are suggested below.

Our company created an event in your hotel last week. There were approximately 200 attendees in the conference room of your hotel. Your conference room was quite spacious and well ventilated with high-quality of audio video equipment. Besides this, the food quality was very exceptional with appetizing presentation and delicious taste. Food also completed the nutritional aspects as well.

However, there are some areas of improvement required in the hotel. For instance, the internet availability was little disrupting during the meeting in the conference room. Nevertheless, the parking area was quite congested. Many people faced difficulty while parking their vehicles in the hotel.

Overall , the experience in the hotel was very satisfactory.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention the internet was 'disrupting', you could have elaborated on how this specifically impacted the event proceedings to better satisfy the requirement for 'fully developed' ideas. The structure is clear, and the purpose of the letter is established immediately in the opening paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is expanded with more specific detail or context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the introduction to the event details, positive feedback, and finally, areas for improvement. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate these distinct sections. You use some cohesive devices like 'Besides this', 'However', and 'Nevertheless' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, the transition between the positive aspects and the negative ones could be smoother. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the sequencing of information is logical throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'attendees', 'well ventilated', and 'nutritional aspects'. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'food quality was very exceptional' (exceptional is an absolute adjective and does not typically take 'very') and 'internet availability was little disrupting' (should be 'disruptive'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of descriptive adjectives and adverbs would help improve the impact of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'You will be delighted to know that...' and 'Many people faced difficulty while parking their vehicles'. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'high-quality of audio video equipment' (should be 'high-quality audio-visual equipment') and 'Food also completed the nutritional aspects' (which is slightly unnatural phrasing). Punctuation is generally correct, though there is an unnecessary space before the comma in 'Overall ,'. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more consistent control over complex structures.
