Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to share my feedback about an event our company organised at your hotel last weekend.

To begin with, we planned this event to promote our new product in the market. The launch was on unique smartphone Ace S7 with advanced features. We had a few international experts who gave an incredible speech on its in-built applications. I really admired the technological devices including wireless microphone and projector that served as an additional assistance to make this event successful. Furthermore, the spacious and air-conditioning hall was comfortable to accommodate a large number of guests.

However, there are certain things which you could improve is the seating area which was slightly disorganised. Some tables where not aligned properly which significantly blocked the views for some guests. I would be grateful if you could be more attentive to this part for the future events.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Payal Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The purpose of the event is clearly stated, and the feedback regarding the seating arrangement is specific and constructive. The response is well-focused and covers all requirements of the prompt effectively, demonstrating a clear understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'However' are used effectively to transition between ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is appropriate for a formal letter, and the paragraphing is used sufficiently to manage the flow of information.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally appropriate and sufficient for the task. Phrases like 'international experts', 'in-built applications', and 'attentive to this part' demonstrate a good range. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'air-conditioning hall' (should be 'air-conditioned hall') and 'technological devices' (which is slightly vague in this context). However, these do not impede communication. The student uses a range of vocabulary that is adequate for the task, though it lacks the more sophisticated, precise collocations that would characterize a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the launch was on unique smartphone' (missing an article) and 'there are certain things which you could improve is the seating area' (a structural error). Additionally, 'Some tables where not aligned' contains a spelling error ('where' instead of 'were'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout. The student demonstrates a reasonable control of grammar, but the frequency of minor errors prevents a higher score.
