Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to provide details about the upcoming event which is scheduled on 3rd July at your hotel. Our event will take place in banquet Manitoba.
Our company is celebrating 50 year anniversary, employees will start arriving by 6 pm and i want you to assign someone as a host which can help them finding their designated seats. I want you to take full accountability, of serving snacks no later than 6:30 pm and mains should be served around 9 pm following deserts.
The hotel lobby looks phenomenal and i would request you, to decorate it in a way that our staff should feel special. I personally found your washrooms very pretty, on my last visit they were neat and tidy.
I think you can make some improvements with your valet staff, they seems to be rude other than that please make sure all of your elevators are working that day. I do not want our staff to take stairs.
I hope you will manage this event commendably! looking forward to see you.
Regards,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the first paragraph contains a slight inaccuracy; you mention an 'upcoming event' but then refer to a 50-year anniversary, which is a significant milestone that could have been described with more detail to better fulfill the 'provide details' requirement. The instructions regarding the host and catering are clear, and the suggestions for improvement are relevant. To reach a higher band, ensure that the details provided are more descriptive and fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'other than that' and 'I hope', which help the flow. However, some transitions between sentences are a bit abrupt, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, the jump from discussing the lobby to the washrooms feels slightly disconnected. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph flows smoothly into the next would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accountability', 'designated', and 'commendably'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'help them finding' (should be 'help them find') and 'pretty' (which is a bit informal for a business letter). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise, professional collocations would elevate your writing. You have attempted some less common vocabulary, but there is room for more variety and stylistic consistency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which is scheduled on' (should be 'which is scheduled for'), '50 year anniversary' (should be '50th anniversary'), and 'they seems to be' (should be 'they seem to be'). Additionally, there are some punctuation errors, such as unnecessary commas after 'accountability' and 'request you'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will help improve your accuracy.
