Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to let you know that I recently organized an office event in the roof top restaurant of your hotel. The event was a success and my colleagues had a great time at your hotel.

Let me give you some event details. The event was a award show for all the employees of the company along with the higher management included. Employees were given awards for their perfromance and we also held a little charity event at the end of teh event.

I would like to mention that your hotel staff has organized the event in a very precise manner. The theme of the restaurant was perfect and the music was appropraitely played. Additionally, all my colleagues loved the food and the ambience was mesmerizing.

However, I would like to suggest some improvements such timely cleaning of the washrooms. The washrooms were not kept clean considering the huge crowd that showed up.

Thank you for your considerination.

Yours faithfully,

Rachna.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You provided details about the event, mentioned positive aspects of the hotel, and suggested an area for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the 'details' of the event; for instance, mentioning the date or the number of attendees would add more substance to the letter. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-focused.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'However' to link your thoughts. To improve, try to vary your transition words further and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. For example, the transition between the event details and the praise for the staff could be more fluid to avoid a slightly list-like feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'mesmerizing', 'ambience', and 'precise' are used effectively. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'perfromance', 'teh', 'appropraitely', and 'considerination', which slightly detract from the professional quality of the letter. While these do not impede communication, improving your proofreading will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion. Using more precise collocations would also elevate your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'an award show' (instead of 'an awards show') and 'higher management included' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally accurate, though ensure you check for small slips. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater control over your writing.
