IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:

– Provide details about the event
– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to say thank you for the recent farewell for an employee at your hotel.

The event was quite well-organized. Firstly, there was a wide range of cuisines from all over the world. Secondly, almost all the company members praised the decor. Lastly, for fun, many games were arranged to ensure a light-hearted atmosphere in the end.

I would like to appreciate the entire management, who made it possible to make the event memorable. In addition, one thing that particularly stood out to me was the cleanliness in the building. I will surely rate it 5 stars on Google Reviews.

However, there is one complaint about the sound system installed in the conference hall. The mic was disrupted midway through a speech. If you could look into this matter, that would enhance the reputation of your hotel.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Iqra Fatima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly described the event, highlighted the cleanliness as a positive aspect, and provided a specific suggestion for improvement regarding the sound system. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose of the correspondence is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. You have used paragraphing effectively to separate the different sections of the letter. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Lastly', and 'In addition' are used to guide the reader through your points. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the text, making it easy to follow your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'well-organized', 'memorable', and 'consideration'. The word choices are accurate and convey your meaning precisely. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items could elevate the writing further. However, the current range is sufficient to communicate your message effectively without any errors in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The grammar is generally accurate, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used a variety of sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('If you could look into this matter, that would enhance...') and passive voice ('The mic was disrupted'). Punctuation is used correctly, and there are no significant errors that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a solid command of English grammar.
