Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. The purpose of my writing is to provide feedback of our recent experience at your hotel.
Every year-in the month of January, The Home Depot #7058 celebrates its annual day party in Holiday Inn. Following the tradition, we chose the same destination this year. It was notable that recent renovations is been done in hotel-the party hall looks marvellous with modern interior and all our staff was impressed by the decorations as well as the tables set up.
Although, it was without a doubt splendid event, there were few opportunities of improvement. The food lounge was set up in a beautiful manner but the taste was a thumbs down. We also takeout a survey post party to check if our staff was satisfied or not. This year we noticed there were numerous forms addressing the food taste.
We had a great time & we wish to extend our collaboration in future as well. I'm confident that issues mentioned will be taken into consideration. Let me know, if you need any further information.
Best Regards,
Hardik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, expressing appreciation for the hotel's renovations, and suggesting improvements regarding the food. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, although the development of the 'areas for improvement' section could be slightly more detailed to reach a higher band. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the reader is left with a good understanding of the writer's experience and expectations. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction to the positive feedback, then to the constructive criticism, and finally the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Although', 'Following the tradition', and 'This year' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. While the transition between the positive aspects and the critique is functional, a slightly wider range of cohesive devices could enhance the flow further. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, making it easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the context of a formal business letter. Phrases like 'extend our collaboration' and 'taken into consideration' are well-chosen. However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'taste was a thumbs down' and 'takeout a survey', which are informal or grammatically incorrect in this context. While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly, the use of more precise or sophisticated vocabulary would elevate the score. The errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more careful word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'renovations is been done' (should be 'have been done'), 'takeout a survey' (should be 'conducted a survey'), and 'it was without a doubt splendid event' (missing an article). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though the use of an ampersand (&) is too informal for this type of writing. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and verb tenses in formal writing.
