Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
As an event organiser from Pertamina, I am writing this letter to you to inform that my institution had a birthday celebration last month at your hotel. I would therefore like to express my huge appreciation for your assistance during our chaotic event.
The event was conducted on 20th July 2026 for celebrating my 25th company's birthday. Moreover, this event also became a place to promote my company to foreign investors. Your hotel fulfilled our request about the venue decoration, which was in blue and white colours. My main director appreciated it a lot since it has similar colours to our company's logo.
We really liked your staff's services during our birthday event. Likewise, your hotel is located in the Central Business District area, which is suitable for us to commute directly from our office to your place after work, and it was convenient for us.
However, I suggest that you could improve the range of your dishes because you mostly only serve traditional foods, despite the fact that we have already informed you that the clients are mostly from overseas.
Thank you for your understanding.
Yours faithfully,
Wismar Wijayanti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. The writer maintains a consistent perspective throughout, and the letter follows the expected conventions of a formal business communication. No parts of the prompt were omitted, and the information provided is logical and well-structured.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Likewise', and 'However' are used effectively to link ideas and transition between paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the opening and closing salutations are correct for a formal letter. The flow of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring that the reader understands the relationship between the event details and the feedback provided.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with a good range of business-related terms such as 'event organiser', 'foreign investors', and 'Central Business District'. While the language is functional and clear, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or idiomatic flexibility that would characterize the highest bands. There are occasional minor awkward phrasings, such as 'my 25th company's birthday' (which should be 'the company's 25th anniversary') and 'my main director' (which is slightly unnatural compared to 'the director' or 'our managing director'). However, the vocabulary is more than sufficient to convey the intended meaning accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. There is a mix of simple and complex sentences, and the majority of the writing is error-free. Some minor inaccuracies exist, such as 'inform that my institution had' (missing 'you' after 'inform') and 'for celebrating' (which should be 'to celebrate'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structure is varied enough to maintain interest. These minor errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication, reflecting a solid command of grammar suitable for a band 7 level.
