Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope you're doing well. I am writing this letter in relation to the event which I organized last week on behalf of my company. Actually, it was our company's annual meeting, which we held last Saturday evening with 80-100 employees. The event included dinner, speeches, and a small award ceremony, as well as hotel provided the meeting room, food and seating arrangements.
To be honest, I particularly liked your friendly and professional staff and the clean and attractive venue. Moreover, all food items were fresh and delicious and served on time. The convenient location and ample parking were also very useful for our guests.
However, I would like to suggest a few areas for improvement. It would be helpful to provide more vegetarian food choices and improve the Wi-Fi connection in the function room. Also, having a few more staff members during busy periods could reduce waiting times at reception.
Overall, we were very pleased with the service and would be happy to use your hotel again for future company events. Thank you for making our event successful.
Yours faithfully,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You provided clear details about the event, identified specific positive aspects of the hotel, and offered constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0 or higher. To reach the highest bands, ensure that the opening and closing salutations are perfectly aligned with the prompt's instructions, as you used 'Dear Sir' instead of the requested 'Dear Sir / Madam'.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a logical progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Also' effectively to link your sentences and paragraphs. The structure is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. The flow of information is smooth, and there is a clear sense of progression from the introduction to the conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and precisely. Phrases like 'professional staff', 'attractive venue', and 'ample parking' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. While the vocabulary is accurate and functional, it is generally standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations to demonstrate a wider range of lexical control. However, your current usage is natural and does not impede communication in any way.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
Your grammar is generally strong, with a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is solid. There is a minor error in the first paragraph: 'as well as hotel provided the meeting room' should be 'as well as the hotel providing the meeting room' or 'as well as the fact that the hotel provided...'. Despite this, your control is consistent, and the meaning is always clear. You demonstrate a good command of tense and structure suitable for a formal correspondence.
