Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir
I am writing to express appeciation for the hospitality and services provided by your team last Friday during my company's annual general meeting. This program was attended by our employees, senior managers and investors, and it's the most important event for our company where we discuss about future goals and reward the best performing employees.
At first, I was anxious about whether our participants would like the arrangements but I was glad when people praised about the food and service. As a co-organiser I was relieved as well as thankful for your constant support throughout the event.
Everyone liked the food your served for lunch. Especially the taste and variety available in the menu. The food servers were fast and well-behaved.
Though almost all the services were excellent, I would like to draw your attention to the cutlery provided. Some of them appeared to be old and rusty. Please try to change these before hosting similar events since it dissappoints the participants.
Finally, I am thankful for the overall support and would recommend your hotel in future events.
Yours faithfully
Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the event as an annual general meeting, highlighted the food and service as positive aspects, and provided a specific, constructive suggestion regarding the cutlery. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a corporate event. The letter is structured logically, and the purpose is clear from the opening sentence. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow the narrative easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'At first', 'Though', and 'Finally' to link your thoughts. While the flow is logical, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat simple. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words and phrases to create smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs. Overall, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hospitality', 'co-organiser', and 'annual general meeting' correctly. However, there are some minor spelling errors, such as 'appeciation' (appreciation) and 'dissappoints' (disappoints). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly unnatural, such as 'praised about the food' (praised the food) and 'discuss about future goals' (discuss future goals). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better attention to collocations to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, though there are occasional errors. For example, 'the food your served' should be 'the food you served', and 'recommend your hotel in future events' would be more natural as 'recommend your hotel for future events'. Punctuation is generally accurate, though the opening 'Dear Sir' is missing a comma. The grammar is sufficient to convey your message without difficulty, but more variety in complex structures and greater attention to minor errors would improve the score.
