Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to share my genuine feedback about an event organised by my company at your hotel located at 138 Wilson street, Hamilton on 21st December.

The event was a holiday party before christmas holidays. We were gather at this place on Friday evening to have a special dinner to celebrate Christmas and enjoy food. Apart from this, several dance performances and party games were also the part of the event. I was helping in the event by taking care of refreshments throughout the stage performances.

What I really liked about your hotel is its' interior design and decorations. The hotel was decorated beautifully with fairy lights and white flowers. Moreover, the hall, in which the event took place was very spacious and good enough to accomodate 100 emplyoees of our company.

However, I would like mention that the music played during the event was too loud and repetitive. I noticed that many people including me were finding it very annoying. It would be appriciated If you could improve this for our further events in the future.

I hope you will find my suggestion useful.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the event, identified specific aspects of the hotel you enjoyed, and offered a constructive suggestion for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the context and the purpose of your communication. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details, such as the date and location, are integrated more naturally into the flow of the letter rather than appearing as a list of facts in the opening paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Apart from this', 'Moreover', and 'However', to link your ideas. While the structure is sound, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. Currently, some sentences feel slightly disconnected, but the overall progression of the letter is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use descriptive language such as 'genuine feedback', 'spacious', and 'repetitive'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'accomodate' (accommodate), 'emplyoees' (employees), and 'appriciated' (appreciated). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific vocabulary related to event management to show a greater range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'We were gather' (We gathered), 'its' interior' (its interior), and 'I would like mention' (I would like to mention). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To achieve a higher band, you should aim for more consistent control over verb tenses and ensure that your complex sentences are punctuated correctly. Increasing the variety of your sentence structures will also help demonstrate a stronger command of English grammar.
