Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to share my feedback for tan event that held at your hotel recently.

The event took place on the 10th of august in your community hall for nearly 100 professionals. Actually, the event was organised to celebrate our annual achievements as well as to increase corporate networking.

I would like to highlight how impressed me and my company directors are with the frequent services and attentiveness of your staff. Additionally, the food quality of your hotel was out of our expectations as well as there is no doubt that the cleaningness was also worthy of praise.

However, beside all plus points, there are some areas that needed some improvement for future bookings. Firstly, the audio system experienced minor glitches during the presentations which delayed schedule slightly and secondly, unable to found direction signs which created problem for gusts to reach exact location on time.

Thank you for your assistance and consideration. Looking forward to work with your team again.

Regards,

Amandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly provided details about the event, expressed appreciation for the staff and food, and offered constructive suggestions regarding the audio system and signage. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully expanded; for instance, you could have briefly mentioned the specific name of the event or the nature of the 'professionals' attending to add more depth to the narrative.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a concluding sentence. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'Firstly' to link ideas. While the structure is sound, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. For example, the transition in the final paragraph could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of your feedback. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the use of cohesive devices would help the text flow more naturally and elevate the overall coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'corporate networking', 'attentiveness of your staff', and 'worthy of praise' are used effectively. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and word formation, such as 'cleaningness' (cleanliness), 'tan event' (an event), and 'unable to found' (unable to find). These errors do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more precision. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that word forms are accurate in a formal context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'the event that held' (which was held), 'food quality... was out of our expectations' (exceeded our expectations), and 'delayed schedule slightly' (delayed the schedule). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'gusts' (guests) and 'the cleaningness'. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice would be beneficial.
