Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I hope you are doing well.

My name is Aman. I am the head of the cultural committee at "Zydus Manufacturing" and I am writing this letter to provide you feedback about the Training Seminar which was organized at your hotel " Taj Mahal" last Friday.

The event was arranged specifically for IT technicians, and it was a great success because of the excellent audio and visual system arrangements. The seating arrangement and the Wi-Fi were the key areas which needed focus and they were absolutely working great, without any disturbances. Additionally, some of our participants were impressed with the fresh fruits and juice served while event was ongoing. The staff was friendly, easily approachable and willing to help.

However, some of our guests had complained about parking space availability. I believe this is an important aspect of a hotel while organizing such big events and could have a negative impression on participants. If there is an improvement for parking facilities, we would like to collaborate for another event shortly.

Thank you

Yours sincerely,

Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully covers all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. The response maintains a consistent focus throughout, and the structure is logical, ensuring the reader understands the context and the specific feedback provided. The inclusion of the company name and the specific event type adds a professional touch that fully satisfies the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving from the event details to positive feedback and then to constructive criticism. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'However', and 'because of' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, which helps the reader follow the flow of the letter. The transition between the praise for the staff and the concern regarding parking is smooth and professional, contributing to the overall coherence of the piece.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for a formal business letter. Phrases like 'cultural committee', 'Training Seminar', and 'collaborate for another event' demonstrate a good command of professional language. There is some repetition of simple words like 'great' and 'good', and some minor collocation issues, such as 'provide you feedback' (should be 'provide you with feedback') and 'working great' (which is slightly informal). However, the range is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly and effectively without any significant strain on the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the meaning is always clear. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'while event was ongoing' (missing an article 'the') and 'If there is an improvement for parking facilities' (which could be phrased more naturally as 'If parking facilities were improved'). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal tone is maintained throughout. The errors present are non-systematic and do not impede communication, reflecting a solid control of grammar.
