Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to provide feedback and insights about a recent product launch event at your hotel. Our firm had booked the banquet hall on last Friday from 10am - 4pm to release our newly designed product in the market. It was a small gathering of approximately 50 people including the employees and investors followed by lunch.
I would like to appreciate the seating arrangement in the hall as we had pre-requested that the tables and chairs should face the screen. The employees and investors were able to watch the video on the screen without any difficulty. Additionally, the lunch served was carefully prepared according to our requirements. Every food counter top was labelled and maintained.
I would like to address staff shortage and limited ventilation in the hall for improvement in the future. There were few hotel employees to help around and limited air conditioners which made the room warm. Overall, it was a good experience.
Thankfully,
James Anderson

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though they could be slightly more developed to reach a higher band. For instance, while you mention the seating arrangement, adding a brief sentence on how this specifically contributed to the success of the product launch would enhance the development of your ideas. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Overall' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas from the event description to the feedback is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'product launch event', 'seating arrangement', and 'carefully prepared' are used correctly and fit the context well. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To move to a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated vocabulary, such as 'meticulously organized' instead of 'carefully prepared' or 'insufficient' instead of 'limited'. The current vocabulary is functional and accurate, which is sufficient for a solid band 6.5 or 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is generally correct. There are a few minor slips, such as 'on last Friday' (the 'on' is unnecessary) and 'There were few hotel employees' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'a shortage of' or 'too few' would be better). Despite these small issues, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not interfere with the reader's understanding. You have demonstrated a good level of control over your writing.
