Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter to share my experience about the event that I organised for my company in your hotel at 20, August 2026.

First of all, I want to give you a detail about the event which was business meeting because of that we want approximately 10-12 chair and table with good quality of WIFI. After the meeting we organised party for one of our employee's promotion. Which includes not only dinner but also balloon decoration and cake.

In my experience, your hotel location was significantly convenient for us also staff were welcoming us with smiles. Not only your employees were helpful but also taking good care for everything which we were comfortable to talk with them. We received good service with quiet specious room for meeting.

However, after meeting we have dinner so the taste of food was not good and it was look like not cook properly such as rice. Moreover, the decoration and cake were missing in our event even though in advance I paid for that.

I would like to suggest that please improve this service in your hotel and train your kitchen chef and staff or hire new employees which would really help in your business.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Siddikabanu Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the positive aspects are clear, the complaints regarding the food and missing services are a bit repetitive and could have been articulated with more professional nuance. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the reader is left with no doubt about the writer's intent, which satisfies the requirements for a Band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Moreover', and 'However' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the sentence 'Which includes not only dinner but also balloon decoration and cake', where the relative pronoun 'which' lacks a clear antecedent. Despite these minor issues, the overall progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message effectively. There are some attempts at more complex phrasing, such as 'significantly convenient' and 'consideration'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'quiet specious room' (intended: 'quite spacious') and 'it was look like not cook properly'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the range of vocabulary to a level that is sufficient rather than flexible or precise. Expanding the range of descriptive adjectives would improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'we want approximately 10-12 chair', 'it was look like not cook properly'). Preposition usage is also inconsistent. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the message. To reach a higher band, the writer should focus on ensuring consistent tense usage and refining the accuracy of complex sentence constructions.
