Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir

I am writing in connection with the reservation and the event that was held in your hotel last night.

The main hall was reserved for the celebration of the completion of 5 successful years of our company. I would say the minute detailing in the decor was commendable. The overall ambiance was very elegant and professional. My staff was mesmerised with the music band playing the jazz. The coordination of your team members for instance the serving the food to the guests was really upto mark.

The main hall of the hotel was so spacious and being an OCD I loved the way the things and every detail was as per the prior discussions with your team.

At the end, I would like to bring in your notice that the elevator was not working and my staff members had to use the stairs to come to the hall. I am planning to celebrate our company's next accomplishment in your hotel only. We really enjoyed and our event went successfully. My whole team loved the

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting an area for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. However, the letter ends abruptly mid-sentence, which leaves the conclusion incomplete. To reach a higher band, ensure that your closing remarks are fully developed and that you include a formal sign-off, such as 'Yours faithfully,' which is standard for a letter starting with 'Dear Sir/Madam'. Despite the incomplete ending, the content provided is relevant and clearly communicates the purpose of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'for instance' and 'at the end', to link ideas. However, the flow is slightly hindered by the abrupt ending. The transition between the positive feedback and the complaint about the elevator is clear, but the overall structure would benefit from more sophisticated linking words to connect sentences within paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, but ensure that your final paragraph is complete to maintain a professional structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'commendable', 'mesmerised', and 'accomplishment'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'bring in your notice' (should be 'bring to your notice') and the informal use of 'OCD' in a professional context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Attempting to use more natural collocations and avoiding informal abbreviations will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the serving the food' (should be 'the serving of food' or 'serving the food') and 'in your hotel only' (which sounds slightly unnatural). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though the letter lacks a proper closing. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more careful proofreading. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional phrases to ensure your sentences are grammatically sound and flow more naturally.
