Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to thank you for the excellent service provided by your hotel when my company held a corporate event there last week. I would also like to share some feedback that may be useful for the future events.
The event was a staff appriciation dinner attended by approximately 80 employees and was held in your main function room from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. We had dinner , followed by a short presentation and several entertainment activities. Overall, the event ran smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.
I was particularly impressed by professionalism of your staff and the quality of the food. The function room was spacious, well decorated and comfortably accomodated all our guests. I also appreciated the staff responded to our requests throughout the evening.
There are, however , couple of areas that could be improved. The registration area became somewhat crowded when guests arrived, so having additional staff available at the entrance would make the process more efficient.
Thank you once again for your assistance. I hope you will consider these suggestions, and I would be pleased to use your hotel for future company events.
Yours faithfully,
Ankit Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the event, such as the nature of the dinner, the number of attendees, and the timing. You also highlighted specific positive aspects of the hotel, including the staff's professionalism and the quality of the food, and offered a constructive suggestion regarding the registration process. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the task effectively, demonstrating a clear understanding of the purpose and audience.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You have used appropriate paragraphing and transition signals, such as 'Overall,' 'I was particularly impressed,' and 'There are, however,' to connect your thoughts. The use of cohesive devices is generally natural and effective. To reach a higher band, ensure that punctuation around these devices is consistently accurate, as there were minor issues with spacing around commas in your text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal business context, using terms like 'corporate event,' 'function room,' and 'efficient.' However, there are a few spelling errors, such as 'appriciation' (appreciation) and 'accomodated' (accommodated), which slightly detract from the overall quality. While your word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for the task, incorporating a slightly wider variety of less common collocations or more sophisticated synonyms would help elevate your score. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which makes your writing easy to follow. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the missing article in 'impressed by professionalism' (impressed by the professionalism) and the missing article in 'however, couple of areas' (a couple of areas). Additionally, ensure consistent spacing around punctuation marks. Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar is strong, and the errors do not impede communication or cause any confusion for the reader.
