Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing in connection with the reservation and the event that was held in your hotel last night.

The main hall was reserved for the celebration of the completion of 5 successful years of our company. I would say the minute detailing in the decor was commendable. The overall ambiance was very elegant and professional. My staff was mesmerised with the music band playing the jazz. The coordination of your team members for instance the serving the food to the guests was really upto mark.

The main hall of the hotel was so spacious and being an OCD I loved the way the things and every detail was as per the prior discussions with your team.

At the end, I would like to bring in your notice that the elevator was not working and my staff members had to use the stairs to come to the hall. I am planning to celebrate our company's next accomplishment in your hotel only. We really enjoyed and our event went successfully. My whole team loved the

Yours faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the event details, positive aspects of the hotel, and areas for improvement. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The mention of the elevator issue is a good inclusion for the improvement section, but the explanation of the event itself is a bit brief. The letter ends abruptly with an incomplete sentence, which affects the overall task completion. To improve, ensure that all points are fully developed and that the letter concludes with a complete, polite closing statement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the event description to the positive feedback and finally to the complaint. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the positive aspects and the complaint could be smoother. Additionally, the abrupt ending of the letter disrupts the flow and cohesion of the final paragraph. Using a wider variety of linking words would help improve the logical flow between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some good choices such as 'commendable', 'ambiance', and 'mesmerised'. However, there are some awkward phrasings and minor errors in word choice, such as 'bring in your notice' (should be 'bring to your notice') and 'upto mark' (should be 'up to the mark'). The use of 'OCD' is informal and slightly inappropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more precise collocations and avoiding informal abbreviations would help in achieving a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the serving the food' (should be 'the serving of food' or 'serving the food') and 'in your hotel only'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the incomplete final sentence is a significant error that impacts the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct article usage. Proofreading for sentence completion is essential to avoid leaving thoughts unfinished.
