Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir/Madam,

I am writing to thank you for the excellent service provided by your hotel, when my company organised a corporate event there recently. I would like to share some feedback that may help you further improve your facilities.

The event was held for approximately 80 employees and included a formal dinner, presentation and short entertainment programme. The arrangement were well organised and staff were extremely helpful throughout the evening.

What I particularly liked about the hotel was elegant function hall. It was specious clean and beautifully decorated, which created a pleasant atmosphere for our guests. In addition, the food was delicious and served on time. I was also impressed by the polite and professional attitude of your staff.

However, I believe there are a few areas that could be improved. The parking area became quite crowded during the event, and some guests had difficulty to finding a space. It would also be helpful if the hotel could provide better audio equipment for presentations.

Overall, we were very pleased with the event and would happily consider using your hotel again in the future.Thank you for your excellent service provided,

Your faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the event, identified specific aspects of the hotel you enjoyed, and offered constructive suggestions for improvement. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the context and the purpose of your communication. The letter follows a logical structure, and the purpose is clear from the opening paragraph. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'However', and 'Overall' to link your ideas. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall flow of the letter. While the transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions could be slightly more sophisticated, the current structure is effective and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'corporate event', 'entertainment programme', and 'professional attitude'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'specious' (likely a misspelling of 'spacious') and 'difficulty to finding' (which should be 'difficulty finding'). Despite these minor slips, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and precisely. You show an ability to use topic-specific language effectively, which supports the professional tone of the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'The arrangement were' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'Your faithfully' (incorrect closing phrase; should be 'Yours faithfully'). Additionally, there is a missing article in 'It was specious clean' (should be 'spacious and clean'). However, these errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, showing a good level of control over English grammar and punctuation.
