Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I hope you are doing well. Not very long ago, we, XYZ Marketing Limited, conducted a public relations event at your hotel and I am writing this letter to provide a valuable feedback on your services.

The program was held on the 3rd of October, between 2 PM and 5 PM. A total of 100 guests participated that day, all from different age groups. Our event was named "Nation's Voices". Coming to your hospitality, I, my peers and my manager were taken aback by the quality of the hall and its sanitation. We not only received positive responses, but also several compliments on how neat the room was.

However, It would have been better if we had been provided with an intercom facility, which would have made it much easier to access, rather than having to approach you personally whenever we needed help during the course of the gathering.

Despite this, my company and I believe that, overall it was a wonderful experience hosting our business at your place. We look forward to conducting more sessions, provided availability is guaranteed at your venue.

Kind regrds,

Sudarshan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided clear details about the event (date, time, and name), highlighted the positive aspects of the hotel (hall quality and sanitation), and offered a constructive suggestion for improvement (the intercom facility). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a business event. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are fully aligned with standard formal letter-writing conventions, as the current opening is slightly informal for a professional complaint/feedback letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the event details to the positive feedback and finally to the constructive criticism. You have used cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'Despite this,' and 'not only... but also' to link your thoughts effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear. To improve further, ensure that referencing is precise; for instance, in the third paragraph, the phrase 'easier to access' is slightly ambiguous regarding what exactly is being accessed.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'conducted,' 'hospitality,' 'sanitation,' and 'availability.' The language is generally natural and precise. There is a minor error in the closing ('regrds' instead of 'regards'), which is a spelling slip. While your vocabulary is sufficient and effective, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic business expressions could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical range is adequate to convey your message clearly and professionally without any significant communication issues.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'It would have been better if we had been provided with an intercom facility...' correctly uses the third conditional to express a hypothetical past situation. Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a minor error in the third paragraph where a comma is missing after 'overall'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the few minor slips do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, try to vary your sentence beginnings and lengths even more to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
