Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. My name is Anuj Sharma and our company recently organized an event at your hotel. The company celebrated its 10th anniversary and all the prestigious members of the organization were invited at the event. Along with the celebration, some members of the company were awarded with prestigious gifts at the event for their achievements.

The whole hotel was decorated in an astonishing manner. The guests loved the ambience and the services provided by the hotel. Adding on, the seating arrangement was perfect and I could not think of any better place to organize this event. One thing I loved the most was the catering service. All the food and drinks were exquisite and the international cuisines were cherry on the top. Even after the events, all the guests were praising about the food taste.

However, I think there is room for some improvement too. The sound system used by the hotel was of inferior quality. It was causing headache to all the attendees of the event. Apart from this, more emphasis should be given on cleaning in the near future.

Overall, it was a wonderful event. I really appreciate your services and I hope you would also consider my suggestions for further improvisions.

Yours sincerely,

Anuj Sharma

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the event, highlighted the catering and decor as positive aspects, and provided specific suggestions for improvement regarding the sound system and cleanliness. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a corporate event. To reach a higher band, ensure that the suggestions for improvement are slightly more detailed or linked to the impact they had on the event, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a polite closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the positive feedback from the constructive criticism. You use cohesive devices such as 'Along with', 'Adding on', and 'Apart from this' to link ideas. While some transitions are slightly mechanical, the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the event details to the positive aspects, then to the areas for improvement, and finally to a concluding remark.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'prestigious', 'astonishing', 'ambience', and 'exquisite' appropriately. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'praising about the food taste' (should be 'praising the taste of the food') and 'improvisions' (which is not standard English; 'improvements' is preferred). Despite these minor errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message with precision and style. The use of 'cherry on the top' is a nice idiomatic touch, though it is slightly informal for a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'awarded with prestigious gifts' (should be 'awarded prestigious gifts') and 'causing headache' (should be 'causing a headache'). Additionally, 'Even after the events' should be singular ('the event'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally strong, supporting a clear and professional tone throughout the letter.
