IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently helped your company organise an event at a hotel. Write a letter to the hotel manager. In your letter:
– Provide details about the event
– Mention what you particularly liked about the hotel
– Suggest areas for improvement. You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir / Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
I am waiting this letter to discuss the recent event organized by me at your hotel.
This event was held on 23rd August at your 'Lisa Garden' hotel. This party was for the 50th anniversary of our company. There were 100 guests involved.
I really appreciate your support and the work done for this event. Everyone praised the decorations and the environment. Everything
was spic and span. Background music played a significant role in engaging the guests. The serving staff did a great job by distributing food and drinks.
While some areas need some improvement, first of all, there were only 3 washrooms available for guests, which made them wait for a long time. Moreover, I also want to suggest that you pay more attention to the menu, so the guests can enjoy different kinds of meals. I hope you will consider my advice and will do better in the future.
Thank you for your service,
Yours sincerely,
Navdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting areas for improvement. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. The structure is logical, and the content is relevant throughout, ensuring the reader understands the context and the specific feedback being provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'While', and 'first of all' are used to connect ideas, although the transition between the positive feedback and the suggestions could be slightly smoother. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the event details to appreciation and finally to constructive criticism, which creates a coherent flow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task. Phrases like 'spic and span' and 'significant role' demonstrate a good attempt at using idiomatic or more sophisticated language. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'waiting this letter' instead of 'writing this letter'. While the range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, incorporating a wider variety of topic-specific vocabulary related to event management or hospitality would elevate the score further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically sound, though there are occasional errors, such as 'I am waiting this letter' (a verb choice error) and 'the work done for this event' (which is slightly awkward). Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more varied complex sentence structures and ensure greater precision in verb usage.
