Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Hotel Manager,
I am writing to tell you that I organized an event for my company yesterday and amazingly it had went really well. The event was about getting funds and donations for the kids with special needs by Island Health. I specifically work with Island Health, and so, it was a big opportunity for me to prove myself in the field of organizing an event.
First and foremost, I was greatly facilitated by the other manager of your hotel in terms of punctuality, services, including seating arrangements, music and audio systems, staging, and food, etc. Moreover, they were so good in assisting the guests. Apart, everything was going really well we got the power outage for 15 minutes and that problem got neglected by the team, and so, we really suffered for that time. As well, the cleaning team was super slow while taking of the washrooms and picking up the garbage. These are the things that you really need to work on.
Thank you for all the help and everything you did to enable me to organize this event to help the kids under spectrum.
Yours faithfully,
Nancy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although some phrasing is slightly informal. The purpose of the event is clear, and the specific complaints regarding the power outage and cleaning services are well-integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are more standard for a formal business letter (e.g., 'Yours faithfully' is correct, but the opening could be more professional). The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear progression from the introduction to the positive feedback, then the complaints, and finally the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', and 'Apart' are used to link ideas. However, the use of 'Apart' is slightly awkward in this context, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter. The flow of information is easy to follow, and the relationship between the ideas is clear throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their points clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'getting funds' instead of 'fundraising' or 'kids under spectrum' instead of 'children on the autism spectrum'. While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. The use of 'amazingly' is a bit informal for a formal complaint letter. Improving the variety and accuracy of word choices would enhance the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'it had went' (should be 'it went'), 'I specifically work' (should be 'I work'), and 'taking of the washrooms' (should be 'taking care of'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. The punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure could be more varied to demonstrate greater control. Focusing on verb tense consistency and correct preposition usage will help improve the grammatical accuracy of your writing.
