Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir / Madam,

I hope you are doing well, recently, There was a wedding function and our company receive a contract to organise that event at your hotel. I would to tell something about the hotel.

To start with, I particularly like the cleanliness of the hotel. There was not a single grain of garbage as well as all the carpets looked like a new and all rooms has a separate garbage bin. Moreover, guests also impressed from the tidiness because you maintain a good level of hygiene.

Furthermore, I didn't like the staff of the reception because their way of the talking were very unfamiliar to the guests and also their words were not appropriate, therefore one of guest became angry to them so I didn't like the management staff.

Overall please improve this situation as soon as p[oosible

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects, and suggesting improvements. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum, which negatively impacts the task achievement. The details regarding the event are quite vague; for instance, you mention a 'wedding function' but do not specify the date or the nature of your company's role beyond 'organise'. The suggestions for improvement are clear but could be more professionally articulated to suit the formal tone of a letter to a manager. To improve, ensure you expand on your ideas to meet the word count and provide more specific, professional context for the event.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'To start with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing, such as 'I would to tell something about the hotel', which feels abrupt. The transition between the positive feedback and the complaint is functional, but the overall flow is somewhat mechanical. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus that connects smoothly to the next.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. You rely on simple descriptors like 'good level' and 'unfamiliar'. There are also some errors in word choice, such as 'unfamiliar' to describe staff behavior, where 'unprofessional' or 'impolite' would be more accurate. Phrases like 'way of the talking' are non-standard. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive structures. Expanding your range of adjectives and adverbs will help you convey your points with greater clarity and impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'all rooms has a separate garbage bin' (subject-verb agreement), 'guests also impressed from' (missing auxiliary verb), and 'one of guest became angry to them' (article usage and preposition error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with unnecessary commas and capitalization issues. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Proofreading for basic sentence construction will help reduce the frequency of these errors.
