Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to give you information about the event that was organized by my company in your hotel.

Firstly, we held a send forth party for outgoing staffs. which took place at the hotel hall. For the theme of the day, we were to pray for them and congratulate them on the achievement on a new milestone. Also, food and drinks was shared after all of that.

Although, the hotel had a wide space, neat environment but what i really loved about the hotel was the colour i was painted. The color caught my attention and made all decoration looked beautifully presented.

However, with all of the good things i have to say about the hotel there is this particular issue i would love to raise up for further improvement. it is the fact that there is not enough ventilation in the hotel and this really affected the picture we took at place that we needed the reflection of the sun to make the pictures come out well.

I will be glad if you can look into this issue and work on it.

Yours Sincerely,

Ogunlana Oyindamola.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the event is a bit vague, and the suggestion for improvement regarding ventilation is slightly confusing, as it links ventilation issues to the reflection of the sun for photography. To reach a higher band, ensure that ideas are fully extended and clearly explained. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'Also', 'Although', and 'However'. However, some of these are used mechanically or with minor errors in punctuation (e.g., 'Although, the hotel had...'). The referencing is generally clear, but the flow between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent, though the transition between the positive feedback and the criticism could be more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate their message clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'outgoing staffs' (though 'staff' is an uncountable noun) and 'milestone'. However, there are several word choice errors, such as 'the colour i was painted' (likely meaning 'the colour it was painted') and 'decoration looked beautifully presented'. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('food and drinks was shared') and punctuation errors (e.g., the fragment 'which took place at the hotel hall'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'at place that we needed'. While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring that subordinate clauses are correctly attached to main clauses.
