Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing regarding the upcoming event at the company. Which is seeking my attention for the event.

In this initiative, I would be grateful if you could provide me with some details about the details such as the timing of the event, how many people will attend the event, and the estimated funds we have to invest in the event.

In light of the circumstances, I am glad to know that we have enough space and funds for the event. Moreover, the hotel staff are so friendly and co-operative. However, there are some areas where we have to improve, such as cleanliness and time management.

I greatly appreciate your time and prompt contribution to this matter. I am glad if you could provide me with all the details of the event as soon as possible. I look forward to your response.

Your faithfully,

Siddharth J Malvi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all three bullet points: providing details about the event, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. However, the content is somewhat contradictory and confusing. You state you are writing regarding an 'upcoming event' and then ask the manager for details about the event, such as timing and budget. Since you were the one who helped organize the event, it is illogical to ask the manager for these basic details. This makes the purpose of the letter unclear and impacts the development of your ideas. To improve, ensure your scenario is consistent throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by the logical inconsistencies mentioned in the task achievement section. Additionally, some sentences are fragmented, such as 'Which is seeking my attention for the event,' which disrupts the flow of information. Improving the logical connection between sentences and ensuring that each paragraph serves a clear purpose will help you achieve a higher band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your points clearly. You use some appropriate phrases like 'co-operative' and 'in light of the circumstances.' However, there is a lack of variety and some repetition, such as using the word 'event' multiple times in close proximity. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and collocations related to business correspondence, such as 'logistics,' 'facilities,' or 'constructive feedback.'

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For example, 'Which is seeking my attention' is a sentence fragment, and 'I am glad if you could provide me' should be 'I would be glad if you could provide me.' There are also minor errors in article usage and phrasing. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are grammatically complete.
