Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to formally express my opinions in regards to a recent event organized at your hotel in Windsor.
To begin with, The event was organized to celebrate annual success of our company, and reward the top performing employees followed by dinner. It was organized at Hotel Wyndham on 22nd February.
In addition to this, Wyndham Hotel is known for its excellence in hospitality throughout the North America.
Hence, each aspect of the event was managed close to perfection. Upon arrival at venue, staff welcomed all the employees with welcome drink and later served 3 course meal dinner at our tables. Also, an urgent request for projector, was fulfilled by the coordinator which made sure no trouble was caused during the programme.
In light of this, all the employees enjoyed throughout the night and appreciated the service. However, I would suggest an area which can be improved that is including more vegetarian dishes in the menu. This would increase the customer satisfaction and cater the needs of every individual who do not consume meat.
Thankyou for your time and consideration. Look forward to a prompt response.
Yours faithfully,
Neelu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: providing event details, mentioning positive aspects of the hotel, and suggesting improvements. The tone is appropriately formal and consistent with a letter to a manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. The response is well-structured, and the writer maintains a professional perspective throughout, ensuring the reader understands the context of the event and the specific feedback provided.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, the event details, the positive feedback, and the suggestions for improvement. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition to this', and 'However' are used to guide the reader through the text. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to improve the overall cohesion. The referencing is clear, and the letter follows a standard, logical structure for a formal complaint or feedback letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and conveys the intended meaning clearly. There are some good collocations such as 'formally express my opinions' and 'customer satisfaction'. However, there are minor issues with word choice and phrasing, such as 'managed close to perfection' (should be 'managed to near perfection') and 'cater the needs' (should be 'cater to the needs'). The range is sufficient for the task, but the use of more precise or sophisticated vocabulary would elevate the score further. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as the unnecessary comma in 'request for projector, was fulfilled' and the missing article in 'at venue' (should be 'at the venue'). Additionally, 'who do not consume meat' should technically be 'who does not consume meat' to agree with the singular 'individual'. Despite these errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the punctuation is generally functional. The writer shows a good grasp of formal sentence construction, though more variety in complex structures would be beneficial.
