Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to inform you about the event my company organized at your hotel. It was successful because the hotel premises was attractive, spacious, and had modern equipment. The hall was very big to contain the staff and the invited guests.
The speakers and microphone were functioning perfectly without any breakages when one was speaking; I must give you credit for that. The chef, on the other hand, did a great job by preparing a delicious meal; the salt quantity was moderate, and he was able to provide enough meals for both the vegetarians and non-vegetarians.
The lighting system was perfect, as well as the snacks. Those who wanted to leave early before the program ended had some takeaway.
The decoration was amazing; people enjoyed taking photos and also hanging around with friends. The DJ was awesome; he gave us the best music that most executives enjoyed, including the staff.
One particular thing I wanted you to watch out for and improve on was the parking. I saw there was a bushy place near the hotel; you can clear the place and use it for parking so that parking will not be a problem the next time we organize such an important event. Thank you.
Yours faithfully,
Lydia Deku

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You provided details about the event, highlighted positive aspects of the hotel such as the catering and equipment, and offered a constructive suggestion regarding the parking facilities. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that the details provided are slightly more specific; for instance, mentioning the date or the nature of the event would add more depth. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the event, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used some cohesive devices, such as 'on the other hand' and 'as well as', to link your thoughts. However, the transitions between some sentences could be smoother. For example, the jump from the lighting system to the takeaway snacks feels a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words or phrases would help improve the flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'premises', 'executives', and 'vegetarians' are used appropriately. However, some of your word choices are quite basic, such as 'very big' or 'awesome'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise and sophisticated vocabulary to describe your experiences. For instance, instead of 'very big', you could use 'spacious' or 'accommodating'. Additionally, ensure that your collocations are natural; for example, 'breakages' is not the most natural term to describe a microphone malfunction; 'interruptions' or 'technical glitches' would be more suitable.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
Your grammar is generally accurate, and your meaning is always clear. You use a mix of simple and compound sentences effectively. There are a few minor errors, such as 'the hotel premises was' (should be 'were' as premises is plural) and 'I saw there was a bushy place' (which is slightly informal). You also have a tendency to use simple sentence structures. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or conditional sentences, to demonstrate greater grammatical control and variety.
