Dear Sir / Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you that last Saturday, I organised an event at your hotel.

Firstly, on 25th August, in the evening around 6:00 PM, I booked a business party at your restaurant. Moreover, the event was based on the 20th anniversary of the company and arrangements were made for 50 individuals. Furthermore, everyone loved the theme of the decoration, which was about Space. Additionally, the theme looked so real; for a moment, I felt I was seriously in space.

Secondly, your staff is so friendly; they welcomed us with great respect and a beautiful smile. Apart from that, from my perspective, your hotel is the number one hotel based on hygiene and cleanliness. Everything is so clean, even the washroom, because my experience with different hotels was so bad due to uncleanliness.

Finally, the only thing that I feel you should improve is that the food was so spicy for me; it's so hard to recognise the exact taste of the food because of the extra spiciness.

I hope you like my suggestion.

Yours sincerely,

Sargun

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You provided clear details about the event, such as the date and the nature of the business anniversary. You also successfully highlighted the positive aspects of the hotel, specifically the staff and cleanliness, and offered a constructive suggestion regarding the food. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could have elaborated on how the staff's service specifically contributed to the success of the event, rather than just stating they were friendly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through your points. While the progression is clear, some of the transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary the sentence structure and use more subtle linking phrases to connect your ideas, which would make the flow feel more natural and less like a list of separate points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'anniversary', 'arrangements', 'hygiene', and 'cleanliness' correctly. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive, particularly the use of 'so' as an intensifier (e.g., 'so friendly', 'so clean', 'so spicy'). To achieve a higher band, aim to use more precise adjectives or adverbs to express your opinions, such as 'exceptionally friendly' or 'excessively spicy', and incorporate more sophisticated collocations to demonstrate a wider lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is consistently clear. There are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'the theme of the decoration, which was about Space' (a bit awkward) and 'my experience with different hotels was so bad' (could be phrased more naturally as 'my past experiences at other hotels have been disappointing'). While there are occasional errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on refining your use of articles and prepositions, and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms to demonstrate greater control.
